Lederhosen, Doppler and Fishing- God Bless His Soul
January 12th, 2007 by Lisa
Things I’ve Learned This Week:
1. My boy, he’s happy about the changes in the new year…Although you can’t really tell it in this photo I took of him one morning this week.
2. He’s not much of a morning creature, as you may have guessed.
3. He started his new school this week, and while he misses his old friends, he is so much happier where he is now. I love the way this school approaches learning- it’s so perfectly suited for him and I feel he’ll thrive there. Of course, that makes me very happy too.
He said to me, “Mom, the teachers actually teach here, not just give us a worksheet to do then have us grade it.” He has his own mentor and she is working with him on many things, including organization. (I’ve been trying for these past 14 years!) But whatever she’s doing, it’s working. He said that his mentor isn’t giving him a fish so he’ll eat for a day, she’s teaching him to fish so he’ll eat (or organize) for a lifetime.Â
I’m so pleased that I’ve found this school and that I am fortunate enough to be able to send him there. It’s one of the few schools like it in the entire nation.Â
4. He’s also happy to be saying “So long, farewell, auf wiedersehen, goodbye” to some of his least favorite people. I can practically picture him in lederhosen now!
LOL When he doesn’t like someone, he really does not like them. Almost all of the time, it’s not without good reason. Run everyone in your life past your children and your pets- they will be able to tell you the truth about anyone!
5. In the South, you can say just about anything you want to about someone, as long as you put “God bless his soul” after it.Â
e.g.-Â Boy, that man is as ugly as home made sin, God bless his soul.
6. One doesn’t have to know Doppler to know echo or something like that. I’m a little fuzzy on this one due to my often medicated state this week. That fact has either made my post and photos more interesting or more confusing! Or perhaps both?

1. Your son, he is absolutely adorable. But don’t tell him I said so.
2. No lederhosen! Think of the therapy bills!
3. The other side of “God bless his soul” is “bless her heart” as in “She just can’t stop poppin’ them babies out, bless her heart” or “Bless her heart, she’s just as dumb as a clam-pot.”
Glad to see you are using your time productively
I wish I had gone to a school like that…life might’ve been quite different
But who knows!
Ops, that pop-up is great….
I’m happy to hear your son likes his new school and teacher and the pedagogical angling. It’s so important his age.
We also took our daughter out of the Public School, and sent her to a private from age 12. She loved that school, teachers and all the new friends she got (for lifetime). (Her elder brothers thought it was snobbish!)
She’s the only out of the four that have a Master. She simply love to learn.
The very best to both of you.
OK so when did you decide to switch his school? I know you were not happy with things goin’ on there and had blogged about it a bit but I don’t recall the full story. Please point me to it if I missed it.
Anyhoo, good for him. I’m happy for him.
I’m having the same issues with organization and time management with my soon to be 17 year old. I’m at my wits end. She bombed a test on Shakespeare in December. Her teacher thinks she may have a learning disability but believes BatGirl is no dummy so, bless her heart, she let her rewrite a new test this week. She gave her the whole period plus the whole lunch period to do it which should have given her plenty of time, but still BatGirl only got the outline done and a bit of writing. She wasn’t able to complete the friggin’ test!! So we need to contact (yet again) guidance tomorrow to see where we go from here. Ugggh!!!
Again, I’m happy for Ian!!
